Chris Hemsworth Confirmed to Return in Extraction 2, Filming Begins Soon

Chris Hemsworth appears at Netflix’s global live stream event TUDUM to confirm that his character Tyler Rake will return in Extraction 2.

Chris Hemsworth has confirmed that his character Tyler Rake lives in Netflix’s Extraction 2. The first Extraction came out in April 2020, perfectly primed to thrill audiences who were stuck at home during early COVID-19 related lockdowns in America. Directed by stunt performer Sam Hargrave and based on a graphic novel co-written by Anthony and Joe Russo, who also adapted the screenplay, Extraction stars Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a mercenary hired to rescue and protect Ovi, the son of an Indian drug lord who was kidnapped at a club and taken to Dhaka, Bangladesh.

As of July 2020, Netflix released data to reveal that Extraction was their biggest movie ever. With numbers like that, it only makes sense that the streaming service would greenlight a follow-up. However, until now it wasn’t clear if Tyler Rake himself would be returning. Though the ending of the original film left his fate ambiguous, with audiences wondering whether he’d live to see a sequel, Extraction 2 was set to begin filming last Fall with or without him.

During their global live stream event TUDUM, Netflix teased Extraction 2. Although it’s been a bit of an open secret considering that Chris Hemsworth has already released workout videos promoting his appearance in the film, it has finally been officially confirmed. Tyler Rake is coming back for more guns-a-blazing mayhem and production on Extraction 2 will begin soon. Check out a short teaser for his return, below:

Clearly, there is more story to tell with Tyler Rake. The final scene of Extraction implied that he may have returned to Ovi’s school, though Ovi was coming out of the pool and he only saw a silhouette through bleary eyes. A former SASR operator in the Australian Army, Rake has a complicated backstory that will certainly be interesting to explore in a further film. In addition, this film could possibly lead to the teased Extraction expanded universe featuring David Harbour.

It will remain to be seen if Extraction 2 can recapture the lightning in a bottle that the first film did. It will be especially interesting to see if viewership numbers change considering that audiences are largely no longer captive, depending on their territory’s COVID lockdown status. Hopefully, Sam Hargrave can pull out all the stops and wow fans of the original by escalating the high octane action even further. It’s difficult to imagine the sequel topping the first film’s 12-minute sequence designed to look like a single take, but if they can, Netflix may have another bonafide hit on their hands.
