Marvel's Spider-Man Players Want Next Suit To Be PS1 Spidey

As fans discuss which alternate costumes should be included in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, one player suggests the low-polygon look from Spidey’s PS1 days.

One fan is requesting that Insomniac include a character skin based on Activision’s PlayStation 1-era Spider-Man game in the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Both Marvel’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales featured unlockable alternate costumes from all across Peter and Miles’ storied histories as web-slinging crimefighters, allowing fans to play as their favorite versions of Spidey from the various comics, movies, and cartoons that have come over the years.

Naturally, players have given Insomniac suggestions about alternate Spidey suits that could appear in the recently announced Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, with the most common request being for the classic Black Symbiote costume that Spidey famously donned during the 1980’s – which would later be bonded to Venom after Peter ultimately rejected the alien’s influence. Other suggested costumes for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 include Otto Octavius’s Superior Spider-Man outfit and Andrew Garfield’s suit from the ill-fated The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and now one long-time fan is recommending a classic from Spidey’s gaming past for his next interactive adventure.

A Reddit user by the handle of ShotDinner1847 recently requested that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 feature the suit from 2000’s Spider-Man PS1 game on r/SpidermanPS4, even going as far as to post a low-poly model of the suit in question in comparison to the Advanced Suit from the first Marvel’s Spider-Man. This in itself sparked a minor debate among fans in the comment section, as both the original Spider-Man game and its 2001 follow-up Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro featured different versions of Spidey’s costume, both with and without the Wall-Crawlers signature black webbing.

Developed by original Tony Hawk Pro Skater studio Neversoft and released just a few years before Sam Raimi’s first Spider-Man film, Spider-Man for the PS1 brought the iconic Marvel hero into 3D for the first time as players were tasked with saving the world from a conspiracy by Dr. Octopus and Carnage to infect the planet with Symbiotes. Highly praised at the time for its graphics, web-slinging gameplay, and clever writing that contained plenty of Easter Eggs to Marvel Comics’ lore (not to mention featuring the late Stan Lee as the game’s narrator), Spider-Man would spawn a PS1 sequel the following year and two Game Boy Color spin-offs. It would also serve as an influence for every 3D Spider-Man game to follow – including Insomniac’s critically-acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man and its sequels.

As such, it would be very fitting for Insomniac to include a low-polygon version of Spidey in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 as an homage to the game that arguably helped make its excellent take on the Marvel Universe possible – especially given that several alternate costumes from Marvel’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales featured different art styles for the Web Warriors who wore them. In any case, fans will probably have plenty of stylish Spidey threads to choose from when Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 swings onto the PlayStation 5 sometime in 2023.

J. Brodie Shirey is just a simple man trying to make his way in the universe, but aren’t we all? He currently lives in York, Pennsylvania. He is a big comic book, video game, and science fiction fan, and likes writing articles for ScreenRant or scripts for some of his crazy TV show ideas.

A graduate from York County School of Technology, he’s self-published several books on Amazon, and once won 1st place at a regional computer fair for a CGI animated short. He might post it on Youtube someday. He hopes that working for this site will be his first step into the larger universe of online writing, since Megazord technology hasn’t been invented yet and he doesn’t seem to have any Force powers. You can check out his work at The Uncanny Fox, purchase his books on Amazon.com, see his posted scripts on Script Revolution, or see his portfolio here or here.
