Superman Merged With Shazam To Form DC’s Most Shocking Fusion

Superman is typically known as the Last Son of Krypton, but Clark Kent once wielded the mystical power of the World’s Mightiest Mortal himself.

The Last Son of Krypton is typically seen as DC Comics’ strongest hero, but when a strange adventure imbued Superman with the power of Shazam, Clark learned just how much power the World’s Mightiest Mortal really wields. Especially during his time as Captain Marvel, he was considered one of the few heroes on par with Superman. But in Action Comics #768, the power of the once and future Shazam shocks even the Man of Steel.

Despite his current power malfunctions, Shazam has never been a pushover. But while he never quite underestimated Captain Marvel, Superman had a hard time grasping the forces that Billy Batson taps into. And it took a firsthand experience with the power of Shazam for it to really sink in.

That firsthand experience comes in Action Comics #768 by Joe Kelly and Duncan Rouleau when the Shazam Family, then known as the Marvel Family, find their powers altered by an ancient frog deity. Mary Marvel is made mad while Captain Marvel Jr.’s superspeed is set to overdrive and Captain Marvel is reduced to nothing but a sentient mouth that can’t say anything other than “Superman.” The trio make their way to Metropolis in search of Superman’s help, and when he accompanies them back to Fawcett City, they find a giant frog waiting for them. Realizing this sort of threat is outside of his wheelhouse, and finally understanding why Captain Marvel was calling his name, Clark says the magic word and is instantly transformed into a Superman/Shazam hybrid. Using Superman’s body as a vessel, Marvel flies into the frog’s mouth and confronts the deity within by using the Wisdom of Solomon to handle the situation diplomatically.

Though Superman and Shazam do separate, Superman’s perspective on his fellow hero is forever changed. When he shares his body with the power of Shazam, Clark is blown away by the strength he feels. He even directly tells Captain Marvel, “I had no idea what you were capable of.” Superman never exactly underestimated Marvel, but after this adventure, he truly sees the two of them as equals in every way: quite an endorsement of Shazam’s power levels.

While this was one of the few times fans have seen Shazam lend his abilities to a fellow superhero, it’s an interesting story beat that has the potential to happen again. With his ongoing struggle with the Shazam mantle, another hero could always fill in for Billy and the Shazam Family as the Wizard’s champions. If Superman is unavailable, maybe someone like Wonder Woman would wield the power responsibly. And the concept of Batman with the powers of Shazam would be too entertaining to pass up.

Shazam is called the World’s Mightiest Mortal, and this adventure proved to Superman that the moniker is more than just a catchy title. Whether DC Comics‘ Infinite Frontier will see any other heroes gaining the powers of the Wizard, situations like these prove that Earth will always need its mystical champion. Plus, Shazam and Superman are overdue for another team-up anyway.
